“Do not let your earthly father define the Heavenly Father.” – Unknown
Growing up with a controlling father often left me wondering if there was more to the father-daughter relationship. Always working, my dad hardly spent time with his family and was always focused on the current job. And whenever he was home, he was taking notes on that day’s job, eating or sleeping. We did not get along very well, so my Mom and I were usually hanging out by ourselves.
Thankfully I was raised to always be reading the Scriptures and I often came across passages that talked about my Heavenly Father, Yahweh.

Once Mom and I decided to leave my Dad after his behavior became more controlling and abusive, I frequently struggled with losing the primary father-figure in my life….however bad the relationship was. As we met more people who helped us get back on our feet, there were several godly and respectable men who I considered to fill that role. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized I already had the perfect Father…Yahweh!
Ever since that realization, I have been at such peace with the fact that I no longer have to worry about my relationship with my father…my earthly father made it clear what was important to him (his job, monetary gain and religious image), but my Heavenly Father made it ABUNDANTLY clear what was important to Him in His Word…His relationship with me!
With Father’s Day approaching (and if you have a similar relationship with your earthly Father) don’t forget that you have a Heavenly Father who loves you unconditionally! Spend time this Father’s Day learning about Him, reading His Word and focusing on growing closer to Him.
